Today we launched our question for Innovation Week. "How can we help animals who are losing their homes?" We watched videos of different animals who were struggling with maintaining their lifestyle due to human activity. We talked about animals closer to home such as the Bison who were reintroduced to Alberta after more than a century. The students were asked to think about animals in Alberta who may be affected by habitat loss and what solutions there may be.
For Innovation Week, which starts on March 5th, the students are required to build a prototype of their design to fix a problem for the animal of their choice. They will have 1 week beforehand to brainstorm ideas, plan a design, receive feedback and ensure they have all the materials they need for this project. In Language Arts today we looked at a variety of different pieces of story writing. We had to analyze them as teachers and work out which level they were. We chose the ones we thought were 4's and then worked collaboratively in small groups to identify the criteria for this level. As a class we agreed on what a piece of writing has to have to achieve a 4. We practiced marking a piece of writing and giving feedback as to what the author did well.
In Social Studies, we have started exploring the Museo Kit about the Blackfoot people. We have begun to look at artifacts and think about what they are made of and were used for. In Math, we are making great progress in learning how to add using the traditional algorithm. We know how important it is to know our number facts to help us with these calculations! In writing today, we talked about how we can assess ourselves using the success criteria. How do we know if we are working at a 2, 3 or 4 level?
In Math, we practiced using the traditional algorithm to add 2 digit numbers with and without regrouping. In Social Studies, we are now learning about the Blackfoot People. We will be exploring the Museo Kit this week. Mrs. McAuley is presenting tonight at Parent Council about the work we completed on the Caldecott Medal Award. Today was a busy Monday! We worked on self-assessing our Book recommendations writing. We thought about what we did well and what our next steps are.
We are excited to find out the Caldecott Medal Award Winner this week! We wonder which book it is! We practiced math games that we can do during W.O.W time to help us learn our number facts. We self-assessed our Social Studies Inuit project today. We are showing such growth in being able to identify our strengths and areas we need to work on. Welcome to our Grade 2 Blog! Please read our updates regularly to see what we have been learning in school.
Today we watched a performance of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. Ask me about my favorite part! We are nearly finished writing our Book Recommendations for the Caldecott Medal Award contenders. We are excited to share these books with the rest of the students and teachers at Fish Creek School. Next week, we will be eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winner from the Caldecott committee. On Wednesday we are having a Valentine's Celebration where we will be doing acts of kindness for our classmates. |
